The Port of Liepaja has started year 2017 with increasing cargo turnover
In January, companies in the Port of Liepaja handled 586 894.10 tons of different type of cargoes, increasing the turnover by 22.8% if compared to January, 2016 (477 819.93 t) and by 10% if compared to a previous month – December, 2016 (528 057.97 t). Dry bulk cargoes are still dominating in the port and made 81% of the total cargo turnover. In January (2017), general cargoes made 15% of the total cargo turnover, but liquid cargoes – 4%.
Cooperation agreement with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was signed
Today, January 27, during the Kurzeme Business Forum, the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (LSEZ) General Manager Janis Lapins and the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman of the Council Aigars Rostovskis signed an agreement of cooperation. The aim of the agreement is to exchange of information and to attract new investors for business development in territory of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
In 2016, the Port of Liepaja worked with increase in cargo turnover
In 2016, stevedores in the Port of Liepaja handled 5.7 mil. tons, increasing turnover by 1.2%, if compared to a previous year. It is the second highest cargo turnover per year since 1991, when commercial activities in the Port of Liepaja were renewed.
Port of Liepaja works stable with increase in the cargo turnover
In November (2016) cargo turnover in the Port of Liepaja was 600 771.47 tons, increasing its turnover by 28.4% if compared to November 2015. Dry bulk cargoes, including grain and agricultural products, were dominating in the Port of Liepaja, which was mainly ensured by “Liepaja Bulk Terminal” LSEZ Ltd. business activities. Already second month in a row "Liepaja Bulk Terminal" cargo turnover exceeded 300 thous. tons per month. In November, the number of vessels serviced in the port was 135 and the number of passengers was 2 270.
Wind of changes in ferry line traffic from the Port of Liepaja
“Liepaja is city of winds and today wind of changes is blowing, which will bring significant changes in Stena Line ferry traffic from the Port of Liepaja to Central Europe. From now on, in the route Liepaja – Travemunde there will be two ferry boats and the number of voyages will double,” today, December 5, was pointed out by Stena Line representative Oskars Osis, who introduced clients and partners with changes in ferry line traffic.
“Jensen Metal” LSEZ Ltd., together with the Liepaja State Technical College are implementing new employee training program
Company “Jensen Metal” together with the Liepaja State Technical College (Liepājas Valsts tehnikums) are implementing the program and training new tungsten inert gas welders (TIG) Up until now, 11 new specialists have acquired theoretical knowledge and are currently aquiring practical skills in the “Jensen Metal” company. It is anticipated, that after a successful qualification exam in February 2017, the company will get new, qualified employees.
Cooperation agreement with the Port of Lubeck
During a business visit in Germany, Liepaja Special Economic Zone General Manager Janis Lapins and Deputy Manager Uldis Hmielevskis signed agreement of cooperation with the Port of Lubeck (Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG)) and had a meeting with representatives of the Port of Duisburg to talk about possible ways of cooperation.
In August, stable cargo turnover in the Port of Liepaja
In August (2016), companies in the Port of Liepaja handled 329 115.53 tons, increasing their turnover by 11.6% if compared to the same period a year before. The biggest cargo turnover was in the dry bulk cargo segment – 71.3%, followed by general cargoes – 23.6% and liquid cargoes – 5.1%. In August, the number of vessels served: 95, the number of passengers: 4 035.
“GI Termināls” LSEZ Ltd. – the best maintained territory in the Port of Liepaja
In the contest “Best maintained territory in the Port of Liepaja` 2016”, which was organised by Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority, as this year`s winner was announced “GI Termināls” LSEZ Ltd. Company received the main prize and commemorative sign with inscription “Best maintained territory in the Port of Liepaja` 2016”. Second place in the contest received “Laskana” LSEZ Ltd, followed by “Terrabalt” LSEZ Ltd in the third place. This year the contest was organized for the fifth time. During the contest, jury paid special attention to waste facilities/ waste recycling facilities, territories` evacuation plans, visual appearance of buildings and overall appearance of the territory.
Port of Liepaja is getting ready for the new grain season
For several years dry bulk cargos are dominating in the Port of Liepaja, including agricultural cargos. In 2015, grain and grain products made 49% of the total cargo turnover in the port, but in the half year in 2016 – 52%. Grain harvesting has been started and terminals have started receiving grains and storaging them, while in July last preparation works in terminals were done. As traditional, it resulted in smaller cargo turnover per month if compared to other months – 337 937.58 tons. In July, number of served ships – 97, the number of passengers – 4 142.
